Barbara Joan Truax

Barbara Joan Truax of Pittsboro, Indiana, passed away on August 24, 2014. Known as Joan, she was born on November 3, 1933 to Everett and Laura Eva (Costello) Moyer in Fulton County, Indiana. On March 15, 1953, she married Harlan H. Truax, who survives her.

She and her husband farmed near Pittsboro, Indiana for years. She owned a catering business in Hendricks County for over 25 years and was well known as an excellent chef. Her love for flowers and gardening was evident when she entered many flowers, vegetable produce and floral arrangements exhibits in the Hendricks County Open Class. A member of Hendricks County Extension Homemakers for 60 years, Joan held the offices of county president and vice president; held most offices in her local club: South Middle Homemakers; and volunteered in the tutoring program through Wayne Township Adult Basic Education. She also served on the State Extension Homemakers Host-A-Hoosier committee for many years.

Joan served as Indiana Farm Bureau District 5, Hendricks County Farm Bureau and Middle Township woman leader. She helped organize and participate in Hendricks County Ag Day for many years, stopping only when her health did not permit her to participate. She also served as county membership chair and participated in the Indiana Farm Bureau Food Check-Off and Ag in the Classroom programs. She was past secretary on the Hendricks County Porkette Board, and was an in-store demonstrator for Indiana Pork Producers.

Joan was a member of the Hendricks County Cooperative Extension Board and Youth Council. She also served on the Indiana Statewide REC Annual Meeting Planning Committee for spouses and was in the National Rural Electric Women’s Association. She was an alum of Leadership Hendricks County, and supported it for many years. Joan was an active member of the Pittsboro Christian Church for 61 years. She served in many committees was a Deacon and Elder, held the office of church treasurer, and was a Sunday School teacher. She was a member of Christian Women’s Fellowship and served as president and service director.

Survivors include her husband and 4 children, Hal (Susie) Truax, Pittsboro, Trena (Ken) Trusty, Columbia, TN, Brenda (Andy Hasara) Truax, Indianapolis, and Jill (Paul Dilts) Truax, Indianapolis; and 6 grandchildren, Tamara (Adam) Ogle, Frankfort, Laura (Davey) Estes, Westfield, Keith (Tori) Trusty, Cane Ridge, TN, Mariah Truax, Bend, OR, Ethan Truax, Pittsboro, and Carena Hasara, Indianapolis; 4 great grandchildren, Ian and Zane Ogle and Lucas and Olivia Estes.

The memorial services will be held September 27 at 4:00 p.m. at the Pittsboro Christian Church; visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pittsboro Christian Church, Wayne Township Adult Basic Education or the Farm Bureau Foundation.
