Charles Benjamin Deppert Jr.

Charles Benjamin Deppert Jr., 84, of Mooresville died on Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Community Hospital South. He was born on November 2, 1929 in Indianapolis to the late Charles Benjamin Deppert Sr. and Effie Mabel (Burgess) Cook.

A devoted athlete, Charles was involved in numerous sports teams while in high school which ranged from running on the track team to being Captain of his high school basketball team his senior year, he graduated from Mooresville High School in 1948.

He started work at Bridgeport Brass (now called Olin Brass) in 1950 and retired as a supervisor in 1994. After his retirement he went on to work at the airport starting at the PGA Tour Shop and transitioned to the Brooks Brothers clothing store. He had a strong work ethic and was an example for many he worked with.

He met the love of his life, Joann, at a Halloween Party, when she was a freshman and he was a senior. It was apparent after their first date that they were meant for each other. They married on March 23, 1951 and had two children; Jim and Cindi.

A man of great faith, Charles and his wife were lifelong members of the Mooresville First Christian Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder. In 2013, Charles and Joann were presented with the Grandma Bucker Award in recognition of their fervent devotion to the church community.

Mr. Deppert was an avid fan of anything IU, to the extent that a he had a makeshift shrine of IU basketball memorabilia in his house. He enjoyed playing cards with friends; he and Joann were members of a golf league, an avid bowler (Tri- County Sports sponsored his team). He was instrumental in organizing the Little League in Mooresville as well as coaching little League and the girls softball team. He shared his love of sports with not only his family but to the community around him. Charles was also the past president of the Northwood PTO and was a long term member of the Lions Club.

He was known by those close to him as a stoic man with a great sense of humor. Charles was a man who rarely met a stranger and made the world around him a better place through his involvement and strong Christian example. He will be missed by many.

He is also preceded in death by his brother, Chester Deppert.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 63 years, Ida “ Joann” (Gunnell) Deppert; his two children, James Leslie Deppert of Leesburg, Florida, and Cynthia Lynn (Deppert) Bussiere (Dwight Offerman) of Bismarck, North Dakota, his six grandchildren; James’ children, Leslie Anne, James Aaron, Brandon Charles and Austin James Deppert; Cynthia’s children, Ryan Jeffrey and Chad Benjamin Bussiere; and his three great grandchildren, Kole, Ahria Lynn, and Lucius Vincent.

Funeral service will be held at 11AM, Friday July 25, 2014 at Carlisle-Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville; with Pastor Kelly Nichols officiating services. Visitation will be held from 4PM until 8PM on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the funeral home. Cremation held at Morgan County Crematory.
