Richard L. Wawrzyniak

March 10, 1927 — July 11, 2011

Richard L. Wawrzyniak, 84, Nashville, Indiana, former longtime Indianapolis resident, died July 11, 2011, at his home, picking green beans and cucumbers in his garden. Mr. Wawrzyniak was born March 10, 1927, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Bert S. and Cecelia (Budnik) Wawrzyniak.

Mr. Wawrzyniak proudly served in the Army Air Force and graduated from Purdue University in 1951. He was employed with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources as an engineer for 31 years, retiring in 1992. Richard was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Nashville and previously a longtime member of St. Luke Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic minister. In addition, he was a member of the Indy Investment Club, an active volunteer with St. Vincent de Paul Society, a member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, and the Soil Conservation Society. He was also a proud Eagle Scout.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Daniel Wawrzyniak and Raymond Wawrzyniak; granddaughter, Katie Winslow.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Jean (Roebuck) Wawrzyniak; children, Mary (Ken) Sperling of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Terri (Jim) Schultz of Nashville, Indiana, Nancy (Vance) Winslow of New Albany, Indiana, Richard A. Wawrzyniak of Maitland, Florida, Julie Gabriel of Nashville, Indiana, Carol Wawrzyniak of Apopka, Florida; brother, Robert Lawrence; 13 grandchildren, Philip (Jen) Sperling, Abe (Michele) Schultz, Lucy Schultz, Nick (Audrey) Schultz, Josh Winslow, Anna (Nick) Stone, Natalie Winslow, Eric Wawrzyniak, Justin Wawrzyniak, Kristin Wawrzyniak, David Gabriel, and Lia Gabriel-Strader; nine great grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 15, 2011, at 10:30 a.m., in St. Luke Catholic Church, 7575 Holliday Drive East, Indianapolis. Friends may call on Thursday, July 14, 2011, from 4 to 8 p.m., in the Fr. Paul Courtney Reception Room, at the church. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Fishers. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society or St. Augustine Home for the Aged.
