Ruth J. Clay

June 13, 1931 — October 23, 2020

Ruth J. Clay, 89, of Mooresville, passed away Friday, October 23, 2020. Ruth was born June 13, 1931, in Middlebury, Indiana, to the late Holly S. and Eva M. Miller. She was united in marriage to the love of her life William R. Clay on July 5, 1948 who preceded her in death.

Ruth was a member of the Monrovia Christian Church for over 40 years, where she especially enjoyed her Sunday morning ladies’ class. During her earlier years Ruth ventured out finding work at the Franklin Flying Field and Speedway Airport offices, while earning both a private pilot and ground instructor license. A homemaker, Ruth enjoyed family gatherings with her siblings and having her own gatherings with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed watching birds and planting flowers. She maintained a vegetable garden alongside her husband then spent many hours preserving the harvest. She humbly served those surrounding her and was determined not to turn away from life’s challenges. She liked to play Scrabble, work crossword puzzles, read the daily newspaper, and watch the news. Two of her favorite shows were Wheel of Fortune and Jeapordy.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her three brothers, Dwight, Larry, and Donald Miller.

Survivors include her two children, Robert M. Clay of Plainfield and Jennifer Clay Dobbs (John) of Monrovia; brother, Frank Miller of Rancho Mirage, CA; and sister, Jeanette Metzger of Henderson, NC; seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
