Richard “Dick” Newcomer, 96, of Carmel, former longtime Mooresville resident and civic leader, passed away August 7, 2024, at IU North Hospital of Carmel surrounded by his loving family. Born in Indianapolis (Irvington) to the late Verlie and Lenore (Prinzler) Newcomer, Dick attended Thomas Carr Howe High School and Purdue University for one year. He was then called to serve in the US Army in the Philippines. After returning, he enrolled at IU Bloomington, where he pledged Phi Kappa Psi and graduated with a degree in business. It was there he met his loving wife, Marjorie Bowlby of Gary, Indiana, to whom he was united in marriage in 1950.
Throughout their 66 years of marriage, Dick and Marge raised five children. They enjoyed being with family and traveling worldwide, as well as their vacation homes in Naples, Florida, and Lake Wawasee. Dick was the 3rd generation president of Newcomer Lumber Co., Mooresvillian of the Year in 1976, and served as chairman on several boards including Kendrick Hospital and Morgan County Bank. Dick was also an active member of The Service Club of Indianapolis. Dick had many interests including golfing, sailing, reading, and cheering on the Butler Bulldogs.
Along with his parents and Marge, Dick was preceded in death by his son, Paul Newcomer, and his two sisters, Carol Stevens and Janet Massey.
Survivors include two sons, Jim (Sandy) Newcomer of Bargersville and Dave (Cindy) Newcomer of Zionsville; two daughters, Marsha (the late Skip) Hubbs of Mooresville, and Nancy (Mike) Murphy of Indianapolis; his much loved 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and his partner of 7 years, Marion Tewksbury.
Dick’s Life Story® Visitation and Funeral Service will be held at the Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, 39 East High Street, Mooresville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, August 12, 2024. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. Burial will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, please consider directing memorial contributions to the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation.
